My Role

As a UX Research intern, I was embedded into the Brightcove Campaign team prior to the launch of the product. I was tasked with conducting rapid, summative usability tests on Brightcove Campaign prior to it's launch in January of 2020.

Research Strategy

Rapid Research, What is it?

Prior to my arrival at Brightcove, there was a lack of usability testing conducted on Brightcove Campaign. With three months until the product went to market, our team wanted to find & fix as many usability problems as possible before they reached our users.

We used the method of unmoderated, remote usability testing via usertesting.com. This platform allowed us to run studies with our target users and receive results within hours. We embedded a five-day process that allowed us to find problems, test, and iterate.

Practically, it looked like this:

Day 1: Planning

UX Team plans for testing & iterating designs from the previous week.

Day 2: Build Test

I would write the script for the test while the designers iterated. We converged at the end of the day.

Day 3: Launch Test

I would start by running a pilot test, then the test was deployed to 5-8 users.

Day 4: Analyze

I would spend the day analyzing the results from the test.

Day 5: Read Out

Finally, our cross-functional product team would meet to discuss results. From there, we discussed what needed to be further iterated & what would be moved to production.

Outcome

In 2 months, I conducted 8 studies with 53 different users on 7 features throughout the product.

Through this process, I found 12 usability problems,
of which 3 were severe.

Prior to launch, my team fixed 8 problems & resolved the rest in Q1 of 2020 before they reached any users.
